Overview

As a co-owner of Uniquely Geek, I serve as the creative and marketing director, overseeing the day-to-day operations. My responsibilities include leading the company’s internal and external branding, content creation, creative strategy, and e-commerce activities. Uniquely Geek was established in 2015 with a mission to provide customizable board gaming tables that were not readily available in the market.
I initially joined the company as a contractor to manage the execution of websites and social media. As the business expanded, I officially joined as the Creative and Marketing Director in January 2018, taking overall control of the Uniquely Geek brand, website, marketing strategy, and communication channels.
Since 2018, I have played a key role in Uniquely Geek’s growth, transforming our sales process into a purely digital one, increasing organic traffic to our website by over 120%, raising brand awareness, and serving hundreds of customers driving a current sales backlog of over 1 year.

We pride ourselves on being a small, hands-on team deeply rooted in the industry we support. The Voice

Our content strategy is simple, spare no detail, make it easy, and don’t be afraid to show some geek.
  • There is no use in hiding info that a user will be looking for. 
    • In our industry, it’s common for manufacturers to force the customer to place an order or contact them to get a majority of the details on the product. 
  • The presentation of the content should be accessible and easy to read.
    • Ensure content sections have proper contrast and layout.
    • The amount of text is carefully considered for our SEO strategies and then crafted into manageable chunks, so we don’t overwhelm a customer.
  • To me, adding some geek is vital to the success of our content. We’re not just selling a product but providing our customers with an expert, industry-leading experience. Most of the time, we have less than 30 seconds to earn their trust and show that we can genuinely provide the products they are looking to acquire. 
    • We frame our purchase process as an adventure, a journey in which you take the first steps behind a screen. And we all know that every incredible journey ends in treasure. 
    • To provide the adventure, we often add a little story into a sea of technical details, weaving a bit of geek and fantasy into our content.

The Outcomes

With Covid-19, Uniquely Geek was forced to move to a digital purchase process for its customers due to the cancellation of all comic cons, meetups, and player events. During the first few months of shutdowns, web traffic increased nearly 400% by August 2020, driven by ~ 60% organic traffic with a user time on site of almost 3 minutes. By the end of 2020, Uniquely Geek had received enough orders to have a 1-year backlog. This trend has steadily increased, leading to a 2-year wait time today for their flagship tables, helping to establish UG as an industry leader in its market.
